In Bodhgaya, monks come from all over the world to study under the Bodhi tree. The teachings are free and the monks are often given the texts at no charge. Khyentse Foundation's great aspiration is to bring this tradition to the west.

What to Do in the Holy Places of India

Holy Sites Rinpoche wrote the book in response to the questions students frequently ask about going on pilgrimage to Buddhist holy sites. What To Do at India’s Buddhist Holy Sites is not a guidebook for ordinary tourists, but for Buddhists who wish to purify their defilements and accumulate merit by going on pilgrimage. Focussing primarily on the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and the great Indian masters of the past, Rinpoche offers pilgrims advice on every aspect of pilgrimage: where to go, what to do, the meaning of pilgrimage and generating the right motivation before leaving home. He explains what Buddhists mean when they describe a person, place or object as being ‘holy’. Included are suggestions for which prayers and practices one can do at the four main Buddhist holy sites in India and Nepal.

“The aim of all Buddhist practice is to catch a glimpse of the awakened state. Going on pilgrimage, soaking up the sacred atmosphere of holy places and mingling with other pilgrims are simply different ways of trying to achieve that glimpse.”

Rinpoche's Commentary on Arya Maitreya's Mahayana-Uttaratantra-Shastra

Uttaratantra commentary cover Arya Maitreya's Mahayana-Uttaratantra-Shastra is one of the most important teachings on Buddha-nature and enlightenment.  It is revered by Buddhist masters as a very special text, one of the five great teachings given by Lord Maitreya to Asanga, and part of the third turning of the wheel of the Dharma.  Within the traditional Buddhist shedras for monastic education, it is often taught as the final text in the curriculum, and many masters say it can be considered a bridge between the sutras and tantra.  It provides an important philosophical foundation for understanding the workings of the Buddhist path, particularly for Vajrayana practitioners. We are particularly fortunate to have these teachings by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche, rich with his usual clarity, warmth, humour and wisdom because, despite its beauty and profundity, this text is rarely taught in the West, and there are few translations. Khyentse Foundation thanks Alex Trisoglio for transcribing and compiling this commentary.

Rinpoche's Commentary on Chandrakirti's Madhyamakavatara

Madhyamakavatara commentary cover In a series of annual events between 1996-2000, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche gave extensive commentary and teachings on Chardrakirti's Madhyamakavatara at Chanteloube, Dordogne, France. He received these teachings from many great masters including Khenpo Appey Rinpoche in Nepal. The fully revised and annotated text of these teachings was completed thanks to the painstaking work of Alex Trisoglio. In accordance with Rinpoche's wishes, Khyentse Foundation is proud to have sponsored the publication of this text. Beautifully bound editions of the Madhyamikavatara Commentary have been handed out free to students during Rinpoche's new cycle of teachings in San Francisco and Sydney. The commentary is still a work in progress and future editions are expected. The Foundation is also in the process of translating the text into French and Chinese and will make these available as soon as possible. Please keep checking in here for updates on availability.
