While Rinpoche is the main guru of most residents in Dzongsar, there is another man who is known throughout the region and respected for his great generous spirit. This man has devoted his life to rebuilding Dzongsar Monastery and preserving Dharma texts and traditional Tibetan culture. He readily helps the people of local village and the monks and nuns of the monastery by providing free medical treatment. He has a very progressive and open mind and a huge amount of devotion. But when asked what he does, he always answers simply that he nothing more than a father of ten children. This man is Dr. Lodro Phuntsok. We were lucky to record Dr. Lodro speaking about about his teacher – Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche.
All the Khyentse incarnations have had extraordinary qualities. The first Khyentse, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, was an extremely great master. However, he didn’t boast or wear ornaments, rather he used to wander on foot searching for Dharma. That was just one of his extraordinary qualities.
The second Khyentse, Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö, was also an outstanding master, married to Khandro
Tshering Chödon. No one ever questioned his behavior. All Khyentses have extraordinary qualities.
So the so-called “crazy behavior” of Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse is not at all abnormal. It is to be expected. Things like making films, this is an important method that brings enormous benefit. He is spreading Buddhadharma. This is such a meritorious activity, not something that lamas and masters should avoid; On the contrary, this is what he should do. For instance, people leverage the media to introduce products, they promote and advertise how excellent their product is.
In a same way, we also need to leverage media to directly introduce Tibetan Buddhism and Buddha’s teachings, and the essence of Dharma to the whole world. There is enormous merit in doing this.
For those who have never been exposed to the Buddhadharma and know very little about Buddhism, Rinpoche uses these modern methods to tell stories and teachings from sutras. When people watch his movies, they can understand the fundamental Buddhadharma and therefore tune their minds to the Dharma. This is, in fact, a magnificent activity. His methods are indispensable for spreading of Buddhadharma.
There are seemingly a lot of female friends around Rinpoche. Maybe this is hard to accept for some people. But let’s take a look at the “Seven Line Prayer” to Guru Rinpoche. We recite a line: “Surrounded by a retinue of many dakinis.” Therefore, there is no conflict to see Rinpoche with his woman. When we recite the Seven Line Prayer, we are actually praying to Rinpoche. What he does is the same as what is expressed in the prayer.
The essence of Guru Rinpoche and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche is exactly the same. Thus, there is no problem at all for him to have women around him. Rinpoche’s mind is in the natural state, not contrived, not posing or acting. This is an excellent quality of a guru. If a guru deliberately corrects his behavior and tries to act properly in the public, then it is not spontaneous.
Rinpoche doesn’t care about what others may think about him and will not compromise himself to fit their expectations. His behavior and his view are unfabricated. This is how an authentic guru should behave. Some mundane people cannot accept this and even make negative comments because of they lack understanding of Buddhadharma. They cannot recognize the merit of the guru because of ignorance, and also because of their own fixed view. Even during time of Buddha Shakyamuni, though Buddha had enormous merit, there were still many who criticized him.
For example, there was a woman who pretended to be pregnant and accused the Buddha of being the father of her child. You see, there is no problem at all about Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche’s behavior. No need to change. Absolutely no need.
