With support of a Khyentse Foundation Ashoka Grant, Polish filmmaker Malgorzata Dobrowolska has made an inspiring documentary about the revival of the tradition of ordaining women as bhikkhunis (nuns) in Theravada Buddhism. Shakyamuni Buddha ordained both women and men, but after centuries of thriving in Sri Lanka and other parts of Asia, so few bhikkhunis were ordained that the tradition was on the point of extinction. After a dormancy of almost a thousand years, ordination of women in Theravada Buddhism is once again thriving in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and elsewhere. Read this month’s KF FOCUS to learn how Khyentse Foundation helps bring creative Buddhist visions to realization through its Ashoka Grants program.
