Professor Donald Lopez

In celebration of KF’s 25th anniversary and in memory of the late Prof. Steven Goodman, Khyentse Foundation, in collaboration with the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), is pleased to present the 34th Goodman Lecture “Buddhism: Past, Present, and Future” by Prof. Donald Lopez. The lecture will be held both in person and online.

In the Goodman Lecture, Donald Lopez will examine what in Buddhism are called “the three times,” the past, the present, and the future.  His focus will be more limited than the traditional Buddhist systems of cosmic time. The past will be the time when scholars of Steven Goodman’s generation began their study and practice of Buddhism. The present will be the contemporary state of Buddhism, as represented in the thirty-two lectures in the Goodman series. The future will be the role that Buddhism will have to play in the times that lie ahead.

Donald Lopez is the Arthur E. Link Distinguished University Professor of Buddhist and Tibetan Studies at the University of Michigan.  He is the author of a number of books, most recently Buddhism: A Journey through History and The Buddha: Biography of a Myth, both published by Yale University Press.

A Tribute
Prof. Goodman was with CIIS for almost three decades. In addition to the lecture, we would like to take this opportunity to honor Steven’s legacy and memory through a curated celebratory program of poetry, music, and visuals.
