New Digital Edition of The Life of Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo

“For those of us who have had a little glimpse of emptiness, compassion, and the wisdom of the Buddha, it is inspiring to learn what the great masters of the past have achieved and how they spent their time and energy. Among these masters, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo shines like the Morning Star.”
— Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche
To celebrate Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo’s anniversary, Khyentse Foundation is pleased to share the revised digital edition of Matthew Akester’s translation of The Life of Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo by Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Tayé. This classic biography recounts the remarkable life and activity of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1820–92), one of the most influential masters of 19th-century Tibet and a central figure in the Rimé movement.
A renowned scholar, teacher, and treasure revealer, Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo played a vital role in preserving and transmitting the teachings of many lineages at a time when sectarian divisions threatened their existence. This biography was composed by Jamgön Kongtrül—one of his closest collaborators in the Rimé movement, who was both his disciple and teacher. This special relationship gives the account a rare authority.
“What I find magical is the way Kongtrül combines formal hagiography and vernacular intimacy with such ease and authenticity. The biography is a testament to Khyentsé’s greatness of course, but also to their extraordinary relationship.”
— Matthew Akester
Matthew Akester has updated and revised his translation for this second edition in collaboration with Khyentse Foundation and Serindia Publications. An independent researcher and translator working in the field of Tibetan history, he has devoted many years of careful research and scholarship to preserving and sharing Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo’s legacy.
